February Meeting

"Water Vapor/Dew Point Measurement Technologies Used in the Natural Gas Process and Pipeline Industry"

Speaker:  Daniel R. Potter
Natural Gas Market Specialist
AMETEK Process Instruments Business Unit

Short Summary/Abstract:

The determination of water vapor (and water dew point) is crucial in the processing, custody transfer and transport of natural gas. High levels of water vapor in a natural gas stream can lead to a number of problems which include the formation of hydrates and the contribution to freezing and corrosion of plant and equipment.

This paper/presentation will discuss AMETEK’s experience with water vapor measurements in natural gas applications and highlight the development of their laser-based instruments for the measurement of water vapor in stationary and portable applications in the natural gas and LNG industry.

Bio: Daniel R. Potter

Daniel (Dan) Potter has been actively involved in process analytical instrumentation for nearly 19 years, working with various detection principles used for process control and optimization in the oil and gas industry, including UV/VIS photometry for measurement of sulphur compounds in oil and gas processing, NIR Tunable Diode Laser-based instruments for gas quality measurements and manual and automated chilled mirror devices for the detection of water and hydrocarbon dew point temperatures in natural gas. Dan has held a number of positions, including service and support engineer and technical sales specialist with BOVAR Western Research, then as Regional Sales Manager, Business and Operations Manager and Sales Manager of the Americas with AMETEK Process Instruments, and currently holds the position of Natural Gas Market Specialist with AMETEK. Dan is an Electronics Engineering Technologist and holds a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration. He has published several technical papers on process optimization and control using UV/VIS based photometry as well as chilled mirror analyzers for the detection of hydrocarbon dew point temperatures in natural gas.
