“The Design and Uncertainty of Multi-Product Automatic Sampling Systems”
Speaker: Gary Potten Cameron Measurement Systems
Abstract: Multi-Product type Automatic Sampling Systems are becoming more important as batch sizes get smaller, products become more varied and as the demand for automation increases. Automatic Sampling Systems allow the integration of low volume sample routing and specialized purging systems, when an Automatic Sampling System is designed and applied correctly inter-batch contamination can be eliminated. Designing a representative Automatic Sampling System involves the evaluation of the complete system variables such as the location, mixing, purging, product properties, extraction, sample handling and sample analysis. Particular emphasis is given on how to minimize the sampling system dead volume and deal with inter-batch contamination. Automating a Sampling System will not only control the way a representative sample is collected but also allows sample collection at unmanned locations. The author will detail the steps in obtaining representative samples, compare different types of Automatic Sampling Systems with corresponding field data, discuss the certification proving process to develop meaningful uncertainty and return on investment. Discussion will also include current Automatic Sampling System Standards API 8.2 and ISO 3171 and their relevance to Multi-Product type Sampling Systems. About the Speaker: Gary Potten is the Director, Project Operations at Cameron Jiskoot Quality Systems in Houston Texas. He attended Brunel University in London where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Gary has twenty years of experience with fiscal sampling techniques, multiphase measurement, dynamic/static mixing design, profile analysis, blending system design, flow measurement and control system architecture. He is a voting member of the API COMQ Committees and resides on the working groups for Automatic Sampling Systems and On-Line WaterCut Measurement. Gary also has current membership with ISA, ASTM and ASME and teaches at PETEX University of Texas.
